Quite
a bit of Latin in this one. Amicus Humani Generis means “A friend
of humanity”. Where the phrase originates I don’t know exactly.
But I can’t help feeling that the dictionary ought to say “See
The Doctor for example” because I can’t think of
a better friend of humanity than him. The title was perfect for this story
which is essentially three stories in one.
The first story is Christopher
taking the resolutions of the new Gallifreyan parliament and presenting
them to the President of Great Britain, his friend and, since he is a
Cabinet Minister, his boss. He expects to be asked to resign his job,
but is asked to stay. The President, a lady by name of Moira
Greenwood, is introduced here for the first time, but I have the intention
of bringing her into a future story. She knew, already, that The Doctor
and Christopher were not of Earth, but had let that pass.
The formation of a government, however, was another matter. Christopher is CORRECT, however, in quoting the De Gaulle
Free French Government in exile
Second
we have Davie
and Spenser. Davie
has two objectives, both of which could have been seen as selfish if he
had played it differently. First, he wants to buy the TARDIS
that he now knows is going spare in Northumbria. He wants to get his hands
on the technology. He also wants to get his hands on Spenser, as his apprentice.
His ambition has turned on training a Time Lord for himself. Davie has developed a lot
since he transcended. He is much more mature than he was when he tried
to break the Gallifrey protocols. More mature than his years in some ways.
And in fact, Spenser IS much older than him but is emotionally immature
due to the way his father had suppressed his mind for so many years. In
some sense Davie DOES force Spenser into saying yes to his proposal and
agreeing to become his apprentice. But there are good reasons beyond his
ambition. Spenser IS a Gallifreyan and needs to have his latent powers
trained for his own well-being. And the remnant of their society NEEDS
every potential Time Lord it can get.
An interesting point to note.
I wrote this story on the 25th and 26th of November, 2006,
over the weekend. I had JUST finished the story when the episode of Torchwood,
Greeks Bearing Gifts, came on. There is a scene in a pub where the alien
lesbian gives Toshiko a pendant that allows her to see people’s
thoughts, and eventually leads to her stopping a man from killing his
wife and son. It was a complete COINCIDENCE! Spenser handles the gift
rather better than Toshiko, at least.
The
third part of the story involves the weaving of a new piece of Time Lord
mythology. We already have the piece of the Eye
of Harmony hidden in the Hill of Tara, with the Princess Tamar Tephi
watching over it. There was a hint in the last story involving her that
there would be another meeting at another time. The time came. The Doctor
and Chris, the most sensitive and telepathic of the family, go to Tara.
They hike up the mountain and down through the tunnel to the chamber.
And there The Doctor uses the Eye of Harmony to recreate the Matrix.
Now, the idea that The Doctor had some kind
of remnant of the Time Lord collective consciousness locked in his head
has been suggested in several places, including a fair bit of fan fiction,
and possibly even by people who ARE connected with the programme, that
something like that might have happened – he surviving and carrying
the wisdom of the ancients with him. So I used the idea. And the result
was a new Matrix within the Hill of Tara, plus a bit a drama with the
princess surrendering her life to save The Doctor.
But in the end, Davie
gets his apprentice and a fixer-upper TARDIS,
and the Gallifreyans have a government and a law, and a
lore, too.
