The story opens with a domestic scene, The Doctor watching his children play on a cold night in October. This was actually meant to be a longer introduction to a totally different story involving the two boys, Chiv and Mac. This is why the boys are introduced at the start of this story but after that, don’t appear. This story was actually written to make use of the split introduction, and in fact it does that well enough.  The fact that The Doctor was warm and comfortable in his home, with the storms outside, and then he had to go out and face the elements because of the sudden threat to normality makes a useful contrast.

An Daingean used to be called Dingle. It was changed after legislation in the Irish parliament meant that all names of places in the Gaeltacht – Irish speaking areas – should be in Irish. The people of Dingle made a fuss because they thought tourists used to it being called Dingle would get lost. But An Daingean it is, and the tourists would just need a better road map.

But whatever it is called, it is famous for dolphins. Funghi the Dingle Dolphin is the reason why tourists WANT to go there. And there IS a statue of the creature on the pier, and no reason why it shouldn’t still be there in 2216.

Wind power platforms on the scale I describe in this story aren’t YET possible, but that form of electricity generation is starting to increase. In Ireland it is a controversial subject, but it seems inevitable that those who oppose it will lose. Turf burning is even more disastrous to the environment than coal. And I see it as the future of power generation in the British Isles. I think such a platform would be more than possible in 200 years time.

But then there is the question of the Sea Devils, and The Doctor once again trying to find a way for them to live in harmony with humans, and once again failing.

And the dolphins – At last the question is answered that was posed in the Theta Sigma story, Aquaria. Do the Earth dolphins have the ability to morph into humanoid forms and communicate with humans. No, they can’t. But they can communicate with The Doctor and tell him their views on these matters.
