Adric travelled with the Doctor between Full Circle and Earthshock.
Adric was a very young teenage boy with a gift - and badge - for
mathematical excellence. He was a member of a ‘Lord of the Flies’
style gang of wild youths n the planet Alzarius, along with his brother,
Varsh. When Varsh died saving The Doctor and his friends and the other
humanoids of Alzarius left the planet in their starliner, Adric chose
to stow away on the TARDIS with The Doctor and Romana.
Adric was not always a happy companion. He felt left out of The Doctor’s
relationship with Romana, his intellectual equal, and later with Tegan
and Nyssa. His clumsiness often irritated The Doctor, although he
tried to make up for any harsh words to him.
It was the final irony that Adric, like his brother, died in an attempt
to save others, in this case the whole Earth. The Doctor keenly mourned
his loss, perhaps regretting he wasn’t kinder to him.

Matthew Waterhouse was born on December 19th, 1961 in Hertford. He
grew up in Haywards Heath, West Sussex and was educated at Shoreham
Grammar School. He had a very short TV career, playing one part in
the mini series “To Serve Them all my Days” before landing
the role of Adric in Doctor Who. After leaving Doctor Who he concentrated
on his stage career.
Matthew has the distinction of being the youngest male actor to play
a Doctor Who companion. (Jackie Lane, who played Dodo Chaplet, holds
the distinction of being the youngest female actor).
Matthew returned to the sphere of Doctor Who to take part in the
audio commentaries for the DVD releases of Earthshock and The Visitation
in 2003 and 2004 respectively. He also took part in the The Keeper
of Traken commentary for the New Beginnings boxset, released in 2007.
In 2006, Matthew self-published his debut novel, Fates, Flowers.
Matthew Waterhouse's name was used by comedians Matt Lucas and David
Walliams for a character in their sketch show Little Britain. Waterhouse
in the programme is an unsuccessful inventor of bizarre and ridiculous
new versions of things such as board games and breakfast cereals.
Little Britain has also featured two other characters named after
Doctor Who companion actors, Michael Craze and Mark Strickson, while
the actual programme is narrated by Tom Baker.
